Laura Daniel is a bright diamond in the sky of comedy stars - one to watch soar!
Laura Daniel may be known from being on the Jono and Ben Show. But this lady don't need the boys to bring down the house. Her stand up comedy is off the hook and will leave you in stitches. This 2016 Billy T nominee won of the Best Performance in Comedy Award 2015, Auckland Fringe Festival and Breakthrough Comedian 2015, NZ Comedy Guild (find out more about how to book tickets to see her here).
Friday night, my friend Swati, her man Jared and I waited to see Laura at the Dome stage of Bats Theatre for the International Comedy Festival. Laura came on stage - not to give anything away - and from the moment she started her first segment of the set, she has the audience in the palm of her hand - equally shocked and uproarious. It was an opening that cannot be unseen.
"This stunning comedian has a high energy style that keeps you captivated through the entire hour and leaves you wanting more"
Laura gift is that knows how to pull the rug out from under modern tropes from beauty tips, to dressing, auditions and Listerine. This stunning comedian has a high energy style that keeps you captivated through the entire hour and leaves you wanting more. Laura works the stage from left to right, swinging her incredible hair from side to side like it gives her superpowers. My friend turned to me at one point and asks approvingly "Does she have extensions!?" For the record, I don't believe she has.
"This is one show you cannot afford to miss"
Laura Daniel's off beat approach does not take the audience through a typical narrative. Her show is ultimate about self confidence, embracing your quirks and accepting who you are. But on the way she zigs and zags. I particularly resonated with her stories that remind us not everyone is perfect and the 99% don't fit the picture perfect mould we are presented with by showbiz. She also has great audience engagement and gets people in on the show. If you are not into that, I suggest avoiding the front row! However, I found her natural charisma left me rearing to go and wanted to go up on stage and party with her.
This show is for everyone but will be particularly enjoyed by women in their 20's and 30's, wanting a girls night out. Although her set has now finished in Wellington, if you are in Auckland next week for the Auckland leg of the Festival, this is one show you cannot afford to miss.
