Each week, The Residents asks a Wellington local to describe their typical, capital day.
9:00 - I like to be out of bed at least few hours before work starts at the Waterloo. I live in Thorndon so it isn’t far away, but I like to get up, put the dishes on, make a peppermint tea, potter about. Usually by 9, I jump in the shower, put a bit of makeup on. Have a bit of a float. I always have music going all the time, even if I’m not actually listening to it. I love Rap. I love the National too, but they can be a bit sombre.
10:00 - Sometimes I skip breakfast, but I like to have Bircher Muesli in the fridge, if I am organised.
11:00 - I leave the house and stop in at Mojo in Thorndon and have a coffee before I go into work. I need a breather before work, because it can be chaotic. I hang out for little points in the day where I can break it up, like lunch. The Waterloo is often hectic, so it is important to stay focused.
2:00 - 5:00 - This is my time for office work - you can’t fit it in when you have customers around. Rowan, our Chef, works split shifts, so around this time it’s just me. Things can get insane - mental to do notes get out of hand. And I don’t like to be stressed because people don’t want to be around someone uptight.
5:30 - A few customers drift in, and then a few more after work finished.
9:00 - I am usually done around 9 o’clock. I walk home or else I am up for another hour or so. It gives me contact with a little bit of nature, even if it is just walking through the city.
9:30 - To unwind, I take off my makeup. That is my favourite thing. I hate sleeping with makeup on. I have a routine - put hair in bun, take makeup off, jeans come off. I hate working in jeans. It's muffin top galore. I was made to have braces by my grandma when I was 22, so I put my retainer in. Then I make a cup of tea. I put music on again. Rap helps me take my aggression out from the day. Listening to some aggressive music sometimes helps take the day away.
11:00 - I try and be in bed before midnight. I read Rushing Women Syndrome and it discusses the importance of sleep before midnight. So I try and wind down and go to bed.
