There's an Autumnal chill in the air...And I bloody LOVE it.
It’s that time of the year when the weather feels like a different season each day and there’s absolutely no point in outfit planning, because you don’t know whether you’re going to be reaching for your scarf or your sun hat. As annoying as it is, I actually think it’s one of my favourite times of the year. The sun is still shinning, so sunglasses are necessary, but you can start layering up with cosy coat to keep that crisp air at bay.
Anyone who follows me on Instagram will know I have a stripe obsession. I literally have a whole pile of t-shirts and tops which are striped - ideally navy and white but I can also be seen in black and white too. I absolutely LOVE them! And I don't say that lightly.
Recently my love has been overshadowed by coats. I have so so many and Autumn is my favourite time because I get to dust out all my old favourites and go shopping for new coats! Hurrah! For example, if you see me walking around Wellington you might think I am glued to my Okewa Rainwear Birmingham Trench coat and you'd probably be right!
If you haven't already picked it up from my personal style, I'm one who tends to favour long wearing unique or mid-range designer/local pieces and keep them for years rather than quick and easy chainstore items (although I do dabble from time to time). For example, these Marc by Marc Jacobs gumboots are actually over 12 years old and I've been wearing them on rainy days since time immemorial (originally from Workshop, Wellington).
Also from Workshop is this Helen Cherry Skirt. Helen Cherry is a New Zealand designer and her stuff really lasts. This skirt is perfect and very trans-seasonal. I find that by staying away from trends when I invest in more expensive pieces, I really get the wear from them. Again, it is probably about 10 years old!!
As I said before, a great coat is key to a fab trans-seasonal look in Wellington. This wee number is by 'Hi There' By Karen Walker and is about 5 years old. It has sweet printed hearts on it and a classic cut. While it can be hard to pair with other printed things, it can work well as a feature piece over neutrals, like I've done here.
Strips are the BEST and this one comes from Huffer I believe. These guys are also a fab Kiwi brand. I love having a set of good quality tops that don't pill or wear out tooooo quickly, because I find these are the pieces I reach for every single Saturday morning!
When it comes to handbags, I don't do well with the kind that are only meant to fit your cards. I need a bit of room. This bag is actually a vinatge number borrowed from my friend Megan. I think that you can find amazing bags on places like Trade Me or Recycle Boutique if you hunt around a bit. This one was from Save mart, a second-hand clothes retailer.
Autumn is the start of a new year in some ways. It's time to belt ya trench up for 2017 because things are now busy, busy! You'd better have the wardrobe to boost you through these cold months. I've had quite a few requests to cover more personal style and where to buy things that reflect Welly's climate so I hope to bring you more looks through the next couple of months, for those of ya who are keen!
While I can't time travel and bring back the looks I already have, I've done some snooping online and have tried to find a few pieces that can get you a similar look. Please let me know if you found this helpful. Unfortunately, the pickings are slim in New Zealand to find affiliate links to, so I've done the best with what I have. If someone out there is thinking about developing an affiliate link platform for NZ, do it! <hurry up already!>
What pieces make up your look? Do you think you'd wear this? What do you think?? Let me know in the comments below.
