Everyone is rushing around these days. When do we find the time to relax?
In Wellington, it feels like people are on the go constantly, whether it is getting a coffee or planning to start a new business or generally just getting work done.
Sometimes it is wonderful to be busy. But sometimes we don't talk about how we can and should relax. I find relaxing quite hard because when I get a spare 10 minutes, I want to use it efficiently.
I am really excited to have discovered the OM clinic earlier this year. I've now decided that this little haven on Egmont Street HAS to be part of my routine.
Let me explain to you why:
1. It's right in the middle of the city
The OM clinic is on Egmont Street in the heart of Te Aro. Egmont Street is located in the golden triangle of Oriental Parade, Cuba Street and the Waterfront. I love that it is so close to some of my favourite eateries, work and also my family. There is lots of parking space nearby in different inner city buildings. So you can go and enjoy a relaxing treatment in between meetings or getting work done.
2. Its really small
The OM clinic is very, very tiny. It's a boutique and intimate place where you feel like you're more at someone's house than in a alternative healthcare practice. It's great because when you go in, it's just you and the practitioner. It means even though you are in a small space, it feels like you have lots of room because you have it all to yourself!
3. They ask you how you are
I had booked a massage with Lauryn, the masseuse months before because my friend Anna who also is at OM told me about her lovely massages.
When I came to visit Lauryn, I was totally beat from running around all through August. The first question out of her mouth (after I'd been brought a yummy herbal tea) was "What's been happening?" By asking the question, Lauryn looks for ways to make YOU feel better, rather than giving a one size fits all experience. Based on what you say, she blends up aromatherapy oils for your massage, bespoke to you and your mood (i.e. bergamont for clarity or vetiver to ground you).
4. You get your own scent
Lauryn mixed up an aromatherapy blend based on my mood with geranium oil, petitgrain and bergamont oil. Geranium oil used traditionally nervous system and helping woman with the feeling of intense emotion "frustration". Petitgrain is the leaf of the orange and is wonderful for calming digestive discomfort caused by the nervous system and then we round the blend off with Bergamot " a happy pill in a smell". I LOVE smells and this just felt like the most luxurious thing to have one for me - and not just a signature scent but a "current mood" scent.
5. You're getting massaged by an expert
Lauryn started training in 2003 with a certificate in massage and diploma in beauty therapy. In 2007 her family moved from Wellington to Glasgow where she worked in an old apothecary and trained in aromatherapy and holistic massage. The 'touch technique' she learnt in Glasgow is grounded in the traditional principles of aromatherapy developed by Marguerite Maury in the 1950's. She's been practicing ever since.
6. It feels REALLY good - and leaves you feeling good
Lauryn's touch stimulates the nervous system to release congestion and re-balanced areas affected by physical or mental stress and also use many Eastern & Western massage techniques she's learnt in her travels. I felt super relaxed with Lauryn and I enjoyed my whole massage (especially when she did a funny reflexology bit). The OM clinic is a totally relaxing environment and a great way to unwind. I couldn't fault Lauryn at all. The experience was flawless!
7. It's great value
Your first massage is $60 and from there they are $85 for an hour. I thought this was great because sometimes places are more expensive the first time and then cheaper afterwards. It is hard to find a good masseuse - because you don't know if you like the person before you go. It's such a personal experience, I like to know that the person who I am going to see has been recommended to me by someone I know and trust. That way, I'm not wasting my money.
I really liked my massage with Lauryn and would recommend her highly as a great Wellington masseuse. In fact, my brother and my friend Megan have both ended up going since my first experience - and so have I. I am definitely going to make Lauryn part of my Wellington wellness regime for good - I'm aiming to book in every 6 weeks to get that little bit of "me time" I need to stay bright eyed and bushy tailed.
