By now most Wellingtonians will have walked past the facade of the former Kirkcaldie and Stains department store, turned into a building site at the end of last year. It has held an air of mystery. We know it will soon be a David Jones Store, the first in the company's 178 year history to be outside Aussie. But the million dollar (mmmm....million dollars shopping credit) question is when?
I've tried to peer over the barrier just to find out what is going on and closely stayed turned to Instagram. Despite these efforts, we've all been kept somewhat in the closet *PUN* about the exact details DJ's had for opening. But HURRAH - no more!
This week David Jones announced that their new Lambton Quay store is opening 28 July 2016. You could practically hear the party poppers going off for every shopper in Wellington. My Mum - who grew up in Sydney - always took us to David Jones when we were visiting family in Australia as children. She loves David Jones and is as excited as I am for it's opening. Dad's starting to look a bit worried and clutch his wallet close beside him at all times.
The new Wellington Department store will be David Jones first ever international store, which is seriously cool for our beautiful city. A Wellington company, Tennent Brown, have been engaged to do the fit out.
David Jones certainly has high hopes as well:
David Jones Chief Operating Officer, David Thomas said:
"We are well underway with the internal refurbishment of the beautiful building we will occupy on Lambton Quay and we look forward to opening a flagship store in the heart of New Zealand’s thriving capital, Wellington. We’re dedicated to delivering a world class department store in Wellington and are confident we will exceed expectations when we open in July. Customers can expect an exciting mix of local and international brands in a premium environment with a comprehensive range of services. We are bringing a truly special retail experience to this cosmopolitan city.”
I wonder what local brands they will choose? What would you pick?
However - one thing is certain. For all you beauty lovers, David Jones has promised to hit the floor running. They have already revealed that they will stock San Franscisco range 'Benefit cosmetics' and also the glamourous 'Tom Ford' beauty collection (farewell monthly pay-check *sob, sob*).
Snooping around on job website Seek.co.nz also revealed that they are looking for a manager for a new counter for Melbourne skincare range Aesop. As a teenager, working at WORLD (who currently stock Aesop), I used to sell Aesop and am a long time fan of their amazing handwash and hair mask. Do you know anyone that would be great for that job? Either way, double hurrah!!
Seriously though, I am super chuffed for the new David Jones store on Lambton Quay, which will go across all three floors. Deep down, I will always be a little bit sad Kirks ended. But with a new beginning brings a new story. And, hopefully, new clothes, makeup, shoes [insert addiction here]. There will also be a cafe.
Final wondering - David Jones, how about taking it nek' level -WHAT ABOUT A FOODHALL? David Jones have been quiet on this one but I can honestly say one of my favourite places in the world bar none is the David Jones Sydney food hall. I could spend all day there!
So now you tell me - what are you most looking forward to about the new David Jones Store?
